19. It has boom suggested that enough money to carry on for

another year or so what is now boing attempted could be collected.

But I have pointed out tik t what is really required is not merely

to carry on the Chinc so work in the rts Faculty but also to start

e now Chinese course. The successful students from the Government

Vernacular Middle School could not be admitted into the Faculty of

Arts as ordinary students and even if they were so admitted, they

could not follow the course in any subject other than Chinoso.

I must set my face against any proposal that we should

but also impracticable.

nything else is not only unsound finance

Supposing collect enough money to

finance the Chinese instruction in the Arts Faculty and tho

Chinese School for four years, then must confing the sc coursus

to the students who are available at the start. Wo cant take on

others, boceus that plodges us to carrying on the instruction

boyond the four years limit, an activity for which we have not

got the funds. I dont think that it would be fair on the Univer-

sity to place it under a obligation to have to come forward at

regular intervals and bug for money to carry on our Chinoso work.

Tac University has many other urgent noods nd its financial pros-

pucts are such as to make any exp Lsion or improvement on its

presont financial basis impossibl.. Indood in spite of my con-

viction that the cxtension of the University's activitios il

Chinese is of paramount importance, I should hesiteto at this

moment to recommend an appol for funds for Chinoso studios,

it not that I am assured that there are now in Hong Kong Chinso

gentlemon who would give to thos. studios and to no other Univ.r-

sity activity.
